EL COMIENZO

VAN DER GRAAF GENERATOR, liderado por Peter HAMMILL, formaba parte de los excesos del rock: un sonido fuerte basado en el órgano y el saxofón, un nombre de complicadas referencias físicas y unas letras cósmicas. Pero lo que destacaba era la voz lúgubre de HAMMILL (le llamaban “el Nico masculino”), que muchos grupos posteriores citaban como influencia formadora. El conjunto, formado por un grupo de estudiantes de la Universidad de Manchester, se había separado antes de su primer disco; HAMMILL trabajaba en un álbum solista que resultó incluir a sus antiguos colegas, y acabó con el nombre VAN DER GRAAF. Después, la formación fluctuó a su alrededor. El saxofonista David JACKSON aportó algunos fragmentos de free jazz y Robert Fripp apareció como invitado en un par de álbumes. Un grupo nada estático.
Se podría crear una licenciatura en “Vandergraafgenelogía” que incluyera historia y las aventuras de este grupo, pero mientras eso ocurre y venga el loco que la quiera formular, hablemos de lo elemental:
VAN DER GRAAF GENERATOR es un grupo que ha sufrido varios cambios. Su primera separación se dio en 1972 y Peter Hammill inició carrera solo; se reunieron en '75 con la alineación original (Peter HAMMILL, Dave JACKSON, Hugh BANTON y Guy EVANS) pero iniciando 1977 JACKSON y BANTON abandonaron, siendo remplazados por Nic POTTER en el bajo y por Graham SMITH (exintegrante de String Driven Thing) en el violín, aprovechando para recortarse el nombre, eliminando el GENERATOR y quedando en VAN DER GRAAF, como coloquialmente les llamaban sus fanáticos. Tras grabar "Vital" en 1978, el grupo se disuelve nuevamente y HAMMILL se dedica a continuar su solitario. Compilaciones y trabajos anteriores fueron y vinieron recuperándose en CD, hasta volver a re-rejuntarse.
Una de las características más importantes del rock progresivo, es el hecho de que la voz muchas veces se convierte en instrumento musical y se acopla y acompaña al resto de los instrumentos que intervienen en una obra, pero aquí se rompe el molde. Peter HAMMILL, vocalista y líder del grupo, ocasiona un vaivén de tonalidades vocales únicas en su rango. El trabajo vocal es de mucha importancia en VAN DER GRAAF, no sólo por el hecho de cantar muy bien, sino por el sentido mismo que le da su peculiar voz a las composiciones.
